We crossed! Empire Ken had just brought me back from the canal zone, one of very last Battalions to leave. The locals lined the streets to cheer and flag our parade to the ship in our full no. 1 battle-dress, kilts and all, pipes and drums. Ah - The Tunes of Glory - works every time!

After we left, Nasser nationalised the Suez Canal.

Did you get stopped in your tracks by the politicians ?
