Here we go then:-
"GYANENDRA RAI'S Falklands exprerience (Mail) brought back memeories for me. When he was wounded, I was crouching in the dirt 50 yards away, my platoon receiving similar attention from the same Argentine artillery observation officer from his post on Mount Harriet, directing his guns' fire onto our positions on Wether Ground near Bluff Cove.
I remember the moment Gyanendra was hit, the horrifying scream of the incoming shell, followed by the deafening blast and ping of shell splinters.
I have my own souvenir, like the one he is holding in the photograph. It was still fizzing at at first, too hot to handle, with razor sharp edges. Mine stuck in the dirt beside me - Gyanendra's was inside him. That one shell wounded four Gurkhas.
There was a moment's silence before the moans and soft cries of 'Lagyo'- I'm hit. There was no panic, barely any alarm, just the disciplined, businesslike procedure of dealing with the casualties, orchestrated by Gyanendra's superb company commander. As ever, our medics excelled.
Now, barely a week goes by when we don't hear of our Gurkha successors involved in some action or other in Iraq or Afghanistan. Prince Harry enjoyed Christmas in the safe- keeping of their wonderful company.
At a Falklands reunion in London last summer, I met numerous UK-domiciled Gurkhas, most working in security posts at Heathrow and Canary Wharf. All were immaculately turned out, and , frankly, put us Brits to shame.
I'm ashamed to read of Gyanendra's plight and those who, like him, are excluded from the UK after all they've done for us. While British units struggle to find enough recruits, Gurkha units turn away countless young men eager to sign up and swear the oath of allegiance to the Queen."
