MY DAUGHTER enlisted in the Army after one year of college. Following boot camp, she was sent to Fort Eustis, Va., for training as a watercraft engineer. She called home the first night after her arrival. "I've got some bad news and good news," she said. "The bad news is that I'm the only woman in a class of 28."

"So what's the good news?" I asked.

She replied, "I have my own room."
