It shows he's thinking and that he's willing to look at the good and bad side of the issue. It's a lot better to ask questions BEFORE you join about YOUR life than to join blindly. Sure, he could have done a little more research on his own, but that's something you can teach a kid to do through various torture techniques.
Websites like this and others have made it possible for kids to get opinions that aren't just coming from the US (insert country of choice) government approved selling points. They're joining the military more knowledgeable than ever and that's a good thing.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to serve your country AND work towards something that will benefit your civilian life down the road.
