| Almost every recent study HAS shown that literacy is dropping in the United States at a fairly steady rate. I don't know if the one in twenty figure is an accurate figure for American born citizens though. I believe that the one in twenty number was arrived at by including every person in the US whether they were American born or were newly arrived alien citizens.
Even if you were to leave out anyone who is not "American born", the number of people who are "English illiterate" would still be surprisingly high.
That DOES NOT speak very highly of our education system does it? Until we hold educators responsible for educating our children and parents begin paying attention to how well their children are actually learning their "ABCs", then we will continue to graduate people that have a low reading comprehension and are to all pratical purposes "illiterate"..
