You are absolutely right here, every Islamic radicals dream to for the Muslims countries to form one great Caliphate (Muslim Empire). The radically led Iranian government is no different. They are hoping that Iran will be the conerstone to lead the way for this (even their newly elected President anounced that one of his goals was something like having Iran become the forefront of Islamic led dominance and power). They see nuclear power as one of the ways to bring this about.

For Iran only to have nuke capabilities would a small, hollow victory with all the Western capabilities.
I think they are smart enough to know this.

Thats why the main purpose of making their nuke isn't to be use as a nuke unto itself.

The main purpose of making their nuke is in conjuction with the development of their Shahab 3 missile.

The Shahab 3 has been tested as an air detonation missile, not a surface to surface missile. The true purpose of their nuke is to be used as an offesive weapon, namely EMP. This would be a thousand times more effective as far as crippling the West rather than a direct nuclear strike.

Their long term goal is to have an empire with this weapon system that will effectively be able to challenge the West and go on the offensive should they choose to do so.
